When you cannot protect them, and you have to hand them back anyway.

For a mother, this is often the deepest cut of the whole thing. It can convince you that you are failing.

You are here

You cannot control the other home, and measuring yourself against a protection no separated parent can give is why it feels like failure. The full stage gives you the four-part protection that is genuinely, reliably yours, no matter what happens in the other house.

What this stage actually is

You cannot fly the other person’s plane.

You are in the deepest of the co-parenting or entanglement wounds: watching things you cannot stop, handing people or situations back into conditions you would never choose. For a nervous system built around protecting someone you could not protect, this restages an old wound with new faces.

The tool that fits

The pilot principle. You are not responsible for outcomes you do not control. If the plane goes down through the pilot’s error it is not the passenger’s fault, even after a bad morning, because only the pilot knows if he was fit to fly. What the people you love actually need is one regulated person who sees clearly and helps them hold themselves. That is the protection. It is not the consolation prize. It is the thing.

Why it never arrives alone

One feeling, several strands.

Whatever is loudest right now, an injury or a loss, is telling the truth about something real. What it does not tell you is how many things are underneath it. Most separations are several injuries and several losses braided together, arriving as one feeling.

You untangle it a strand at a time. Name one piece, work out whether that piece is an injury or a loss, and give it the thing it actually answers to. An injury closes through discharge plus restoring the boundary. A loss closes only through being met and tended. Give either one the other’s medicine and it tightens instead of easing.

That is also why your check can name a thread and a stage that seem not to match. The gap is the finding, not a fault in the result. Run the check again on the next piece whenever one flares.

This is a taste of the full stage

You have just read the recognition and the tool. The complete stage takes it further: how to steady the body before you do the work, the whole stage in its proper shape, and a worksheet to work it through. It lives inside the Two Threads programme.
